League of Legends developer Riot Games sued for gender discrimination

'League of Legends' Creator Riot Games Is Being Sued for Gender Discrimination

League of Legends publisher Riot Games has been hit by a lawsuit from one current and one former employee, accusing the company of "endemic gender-based discrimination" as well as fostering a 'men-first environment'.

Riot Games, known most for having developed League of Legends, has faced allegations of sexism in the workplace in the past few months, with reports of at least 28 employees describing Riot's workplace as "toxic".

"Like many of Riot Games' female employees, Plaintiffs have been denied equal pay and found their careers stifled because they are women", the lawsuit said.

'Moreover, Plaintiffs have also seen their working conditions negatively impacted because of the ongoing sexual harassment, misconduct, and bias which predominate the sexually-hostile working environment of Riot Games'.

Plaintiff Jessica Negron states that female employees are often expected to take on duties above their pay grade without compensation, violating California's Equal Pay Act.

According to Kotaku, Riot has made steps in firing numerous people accused of contributing towards the "bro culture" at the company, although state they still employ several of the "key alleged perpetrators of abusive behavior".

McCracken states that for the past five years that she has worked for Riot Games, she was also denied promotions, which she ascertains are due to her gender, and not her capabilities. According to the claim, one of the plaintiffs counted male Riot Games using the work dick more than 500 times during a single month.

As mentioned in previous reports from Kotaku, Riot has 80% male staff and has previously spiked female interviewees because they did not fit their ideal of "core gamers".

The plaintiffs are seeking damages including all wages (base salary, bonuses, and stock), punitive damages, statutory and civil penalties, and legal fees. The court will need to certify the lawsuit for it to become class action. Riot did not immediately respond to Kotaku's request for comment about the lawsuit. The matter seems to have been buried after a drawn-out internal investigation, but an in-the-works promotion to a new position ground to a halt this summer after she was sidelined by management. Despite a loose promise that the position should be hers, three separate men were hired for the role instead.

McCracken took a new position in 2015 as an office manager in the North America region.

Riot Games headquarters in Los Angeles. In another supposed incident with her COO, Scott Gelb, McCracken was told by Gelb to "cover up" assorted rumors about his actions at a dance club.

Afterward, McCracken, whom the complaint says was close to getting promoted, was reportedly prevented from attending meetings with senior leadership and that some of her current projects were cut off at the knees.
