Just in time for Thanksgiving: 4 recalled turkey products to avoid

How long to cook a turkey- a quick printable to download and use

Thanksgiving is less than a week away, and federal health officials are still trying to identify the source of a salmonella illness outbreak linked to raw turkey products that has spread to 35 states and sickened 164 people. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The recall affects four different types of Jennie-O turkey: Taco Seasoned, Italian Seasoned, 85% Lean, and 93% Lean. They had a use-by date of October, but could still be in freezers.

The recalled products have an establishment number of P-190.

It's unclear where the turkey at the center of this outbreak came from, as there doesn't appear to be one centralized distributor, and the USDA is (somewhat controversially) not naming particular brands.

Kroger and Meijer stores sell Jennie-O turkey. More than 60 people have been hospitalized, and there has been one death attributed to the outbreak. The ongoing hunt has found the salmonella strain in raw turkey pet food, ground turkey, turkey patties, and in live turkeys, indicating "it might be widespread in the turkey industry". The outbreak, which began around November 20th of a year ago, has sent at least 63 people to the hospital and claimed at least one life.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, and stomach aches which develop 12 to 72 hours after coming into contact with the bacterial strain.

The latest outbreak of salmonella poisoning began in November 2017.

Sharing the brands and products would allow consumers to better protect themselves, Consumer Reports says.

There are an estimated 1.2 million salmonella cases in the United States annually, and various foods are to blame for about 1 million of those illnesses, according to the CDC.

Antibiotics may be used to treat more serious infections. Most people recover without treatment. Producers use food-grade rinses that kill or reduce the growth of bacteria, organic sprays to clean the turkeys and inhibit bacteria, and USDA inspectors are "continuously present" in every turkey facility to monitor food safety, the industry group said. No one should be eating partially cooked or raw turkey.
