Jordan flash floods kill 11 and force tourist evacuation of Petra

Jordanian civil defense members near the Dead Sea conduct a rescue mission after rain storms unleashed flash floods in Jordan

He added that the floods in Petra are within their natural conditions and that the cadres of the Petra Commission are now working on counting tourists and evacuating them to their hotels, adding that the areas that have been exposed to the floods are: Wadi Musa and other areas, adding that the Desert Highway is open, under normal traffic conditions and with no reported accidents so far.

Government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat said two dozen people were injured and dozens more evacuated as homes were flooded in several locations.

One of the killed is a 7-year old girl who died in Madaba.

"Our embassy in Tel Aviv contacted the Israeli foreign ministry for information on the identities of the missing Israelis", Ghneimat said in statements carried by the state news agency Petra. "All of them were found".

It also said that it has dispatched troops and armored vehicles from its base in the southern town of Al Jafr to assist residents who were trapped by floods in nearby areas.

A rescuer was also among the dead, the civil defence spokesman said.

Amateur video posted online showed a powerful torrent rushing through the steep, narrow canyon through which visitors reach the Treasury, the main attraction of Petra, an ancient trading hub carved from rose-colored rock.

It broadcast footage showing people standing on both sides of the main road in Petra and along the desert highway trying to stay clear of the floods.

Its landscapes served as a backdrop in the filming of the Hollywood classic "Lawrence of Arabia".

Jordan has seen a series of deadly floods in recent weeks, including one in late October that swept away a school bus near the Dead Sea, killing 21 people, mostly schoolchildren.

An excavator is partially submerged in a stream after rain storms unleashed flash floods, in Madaba city, near Amman, Jordan, November 10, 2018. There was a public outcry last month after 18 children on a school trip were swept away, leading to the resignation of the country's education and tourism ministers.

Jordan is a water-poor country that is 90 percent desert.
