Jo Johnson says more ministers could quit over 'chaotic' Brexit

UPDATE 1-British minister optimistic about Brexit deal with EU - Funke - Macroeconomic News

His brother followed in his footsteps yesterday by announcing his resignation as transport minister.

"It's up to (lawmakers) to take a stand, I've done so, if others feel that it's right for them to do so then good on them".

Johnson, the MP for Orpington in Kent, spoke the morning after announcing his resignation from the cabinet with an open letter that delivered a stinging criticism of the deal negotiated between Theresa May and European Union leaders in Brussels.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who resigned earlier this year over the Prime Minister's Chequers proposal, said that the brothers were "united in dismay".

As a result, he said it would be a "democratic travesty" if the government did not consult the public on whether they still wanted to leave the world's largest trading bloc.

"While we wait to negotiate trading terms, the rules of the game will be set exclusively by the EU".

Mr Johnson's sister Rachel said she was "hugely proud" of her "honourable and principled brother Jo who has put the interests of the country ahead of his political career".

Mr Johnson voted to remain in the 2016 EU Referendum and is now backing the campaign for a People's Vote.

"There is a very important message in there to all Conservative members of Parliament, many of whom are appalled by what is happening but not saying what they think".

Speaking to Matt Frei, Stanley Johnson reiterated that Jo resigned because the government is not delivering Brexit and because he can not support the Brexit plan "in honesty".

Calling for a second referendum to be held on Brexit, Mr Johnson denounced the choice between Mrs May's deal plans or a no-deal scenario as a "failure of British statecraft on a scale unseen since the Suez crisis" that had left Britain facing "vassalage" or "chaos".

He told the Today programme: "My basic disagreement with Jo is about the need for a second referendum".

SNP MP Stephen Gethins said: "Theresa May's authority is completely gone, and it is clear that her attempts to hobble together a deal can't even unite her Government, never mind the country".
