Jo Johnson quits government over Brexit, calling for second referendum

Brexit campaigner and Member of the European Parliament Nigel Farage attends a debate on the guidelines on the framework of future EU-UK relations at the European Parliament in Strasbourg France

Johnson said his brother Boris, who led the Leave campaign, was "as unhappy with the government's proposals as I am".

The Government continues to rule out a second referendum.

"We may not have agreed about Brexit but we are united in dismay at the intellectually and politically indefensible".

Mr. Johnson is the MP for Orpington, a town in the south eastern county of Kent that threatened to become a "lorry park" in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Labour Shadow Brexit Minister Jenny Chapman said that Theresa May had "lost all authority and is incapable of negotiating a Brexit deal within her own party, let alone with the EU".

Jo voted to remain in the European Union while Boris was a leading Brexiteer. The "democratic thing to do is to give the public the final say", he argued.

Mr Guru-Murthy said: "But only if the Prime Minister agrees".

Instead, Johnson said it would be proper to give the British public a chance to vote again because of the way the Brexit negotiations have evolved. But to leave at this moment, right when Theresa May is trying to stitch together a final deal, could have a serious impact.

Eloise Todd, head of the anti-Brexit campaign group Best for Britain, said: "This is an incredibly courageous move from Jo Johnson at a time when the public desperately needs more MPs to act in the national interest". My loyalty to the party is undimmed. But it is just a facet of a far greater problem facing the nation.

A spokesman said: "The referendum in 2016 was the biggest democratic exercise in this country's history. We will not under any circumstances have a second referendum", Downing Street said.

The GDP update came as British Prime Minister Theresa May drew the fury of her crucial Northern Irish allies after seemingly accepting an EU-backed Brexit solution they fervently oppose.

He told a tech industry meeting in London on Wednesday: "I don't think it is a question so much of the risk of major shortages, but I think probably the average consumer might not be aware of the full extent to which the choice of goods that we have in the stores are dependent on one or two very specific trade routes".

Calling Theresa May's Brexit deal "a awful mistake", the minister of state for transport quit his post, claiming the United Kingdom economy would suffer from May's Brexit agreement.

Boris Johnson tweeted supported for his brother's resignation.

Asked whether he believed the British public had changed its view on Brexit, he replied: "I think there's a great deal to suggest that the public are changing their view and that a lot of people now realise that in fact leaving the European Union in the way that it is projected, it's likely to leave us at a disadvantage".
