Is interstellar object ‘Oumuamua an alien space probe?

This unique object was discovered on 19 October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii

The study noted the possibility that the elongated dark-red object, which is 10 times as long as it is wide and travelling at speeds of 315,364 km per hour (kmh), might have an "artificial origin", Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the recent reports, Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard's department of astronomy observed a mysterious object that flew close to the sun previous year to be an Alien Spacecraft.

A cigar-shaped interstellar object that flew past the sun probably isn't an alien spacecraft, scientists are saying, despite the suggestion by researchers from Harvard University.

Their theory of the "exotic" by their own admission, is based on the speed of Oumuamua, more important than expected for a vehicle of this shape.

While two scientists speculate that the mysterious space rock Oumuamua which cruises across our solar system may be some kind of alien craft, at least one astronomer stepped forward to debunk their claim. And even if the shape could hold up against interstellar weathering, it would still be a form unlike anything that exists on Earth, or anything that could exist under the currently-understood laws of astrophysics. Considering the unusual path it was following, and the reddish stadium sized appearance it had on it, it was pretty clear that the object does not belong to our solar system.

They go on to state, "a more exotic scenario is that Oumuamua may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization".

In their paper, which has been peer reviewed, the astronomers show that 'Oumuamua's trajectory can be explained by the acceleration caused by sunlight reflecting from the object. "It's just like wind hitting a sail", except instead of wind, it's light propelling the object forward. On Nov. 1, Bialy and Loeb released a pre-print of a paper, to be published The Astrophysical Journal Letters later this month, exploring the solar-radiation hypothesis. In order for it to be effective, Oumuamua needs to be less than a millimetre in thickness, like a sail.

"Like most scientists, I would love there to be convincing evidence of alien life, but this isn't it", Alan Fitzsimmons, an astrophysicist at Queens University, Belfast, told AFP.

What we do know is the Oumuamua is the first object ever seen in our solar system that is known to have originated elsewhere.

"It is impossible to guess the objective behind Oumuamua without more data", Loeb was quoted as saying.
