Illegal border crossers now ineligible for asylum, White House says

Trump administration rolls out hard-line immigration policy drastically restricting asylum access at Mexican border

Illegal migrants entering through the southern USA border will no longer be eligible for asylum under a new rule, the Trump administration has said.

The Trump administration is taking steps to tighten asylum rules for immigrants, something President Trump declared he would do last week ahead of Tuesday's midterms.

The measures are meant to funnel asylum seekers through official border crossings for speedy rulings, officials said, instead of having them try to circumvent such crossings on the almost 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometre) border.

Central American migrants on Wednesday continued to straggle in for a rest stop at a Mexico City stadium, where about 4,500 continue to weigh offers to stay in Mexico against the desire of many to reach the USA border. "Under current practice, border agents are repeatedly turning asylum-seekers away and telling them to come back another day".

The American Civil Liberties Union said that right of asylum must be granted to anyone entering the country, regardless of where they were.

The regulations will be incorporated in a proclamation expected to be issued Friday by President Donald Trump.

Slate reported on November 5 that Kavanaugh has declined to "run interference" for Trump in three of his early rulings - when he declined to rule on the controversial citizenship question on the 2020 Census; when he did not publicly share his vote on the deposition of former commerce secretary Wilbur Ross and stayed mum on the court's decision to punt the legality of the citizenship question to a circuit court.

"Our asylum system is overwhelmed with too many meritless asylum claims from aliens who place a tremendous burden on our resources, preventing us from being able to expeditiously grant asylum to those who truly deserve it", said the joint statement.

Immigrant advocates denounced the administration's move as unlawful, and said the plan to funnel migrants to ports of entry was just a way to cut asylum claims overall. The military is expected to have the vast majority of the more than 7,000 troops planned for the mission deployed by Monday, and that number could grow.

Members of the migrant caravan arrive at the shelter of the Church of the Assumption, in the city of Puebla.

A senior administration official said the restriction on asylum claims will seek to address the "historically unparalleled abuse of our immigration system".

One senior administration official spoke to reporters in a news briefing on condition of anonymity.

Those seeking asylum must be fleeing due to a serious fear of persecution. It's unknown whether those in the caravan, many fleeing violence in their homeland, plan to cross illegally.

That way, he said, courts will "handle those claims in an expeditious and efficient manner, so that those who do actually require an asylum protection get those protections".
