Here are the candidates who made history in the 2018 midterms

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins election to New York’s 14th congressional district

Voters in Colorado also elected the nation's first-ever openly gay man to lead their state Tuesday. There was a mix of people of all ages (including one girl genuinely thrilled to be spending her fourth birthday at the event), but overwhelmingly, the staff and volunteers and interns and supporters were young people, many of whom were engaging in politics for the first time and were so excited to be there, and so proud of the work they put in.

Texas is set to send its first Hispanic women to Congress, as Democrats Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia both won their races.

Ayanna Pressley, congresswoman-elect for Massachusetts' 7th district.

"When you talk about Democrats clinching control of the House, you have the women candidates to thank", Delmore said.

Ocasio-Cortez' victory over Republican Anthony Pappas, an economics professor, had been widely expected since the Democratic primary in June, when she scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley.

Around 80 per cent of the women candidates in this election were defending their seats, and around 70 per cent held them. "The first role of women as military flyers was during World War II as Women Airforce Service Pilots, an organization disbanded after the war", Colonel McSally said. Among the new names joining Congress after Tuesday are a host of young, Muslim, Latin, immigrant, and LGBT canidadates.

Democrats Sharice Davids of Kansas and Deb Haaland of New Mexico will be the first Native American women who are members of the US House of Representatives.

Pressley said, "Now, listen, I know for a fact none of us ran to make history, we ran to make change".

Kansas Democrat Sharice Davids became the first Native American woman elected to Congress, defeating Republican incumbent Kevin Yoder. Several were first-time candidates.

Most of the women who won were Democrats who helped the party capture a majority in the House.

She also spent months leading up the midterm elections fundraising and stumping for other progressives, including Michigan's Rashida Tlaib, who became one of the first two Muslim women elected into Congress.

Yesterday's election will ensure that the U.S. House of Representatives looks a lot more like the country it represents.

Nearly 80% of voters in a CNN exit poll said it's very or somewhat important that more women and racial minorities be elected to public office, with two-thirds of white voters agreeing.

"Though prominent figures like Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for governor of Florida, failed to win their potentially historic elections, many candidates around the country became the first person of their gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation to be elected to their positions in their states, or in some cases, in the country".
