Has Theresa May secured a breakthrough to seal a Brexit deal?

The low angle of the sun at this time of year is a joy when the weather is bright as this week

"As soon as MPs understand what is really at stake, I have no doubt that they will throw this deal out".

Theresa May has secured concessions from Brussels to keep the whole of the United Kingdom in a customs union after Brexit - avoiding a hard Irish border, The Sunday Times reports.

According to the Times, the European Union has agreed to May's call for a United Kingdom -wide customs deal, that would negated the need for checks either between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland, or at the frontier with the Republic of Ireland.

The move could win over some opposition Labour MPs and increase the chances of getting such an agreement through the House of Commons.

Sky (Frankfurt: 893517 - news) 's political correspondent Lewis Goodall said if Conservative Brexiteers are unconvinced that the customs union is only a temporary measure they would nearly certainly rebel.

Last night prominent Brexiteer MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the European Research Group, told The Mail on Sunday: 'It would be a major breach of faith.

Writing in the "Observer", Mr Blair said the United Kingdom government has tabled a series of "incompatible demands" which has led to a negotiating impasse. "They should resist. There is no "reasonable deal", he wrote. Appears any old deal now better than no deal'. Customs checks would take place in factories and shops to avoid disruption at borders, it was reported.

This would also completely avoid the need for a "backstop" solution, which would have seen a hard border return between the Republic Of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Under the banner headline "May's Secret Brexit Deal", the newspaper said she's also on course to gain an agreement on a "future economic partnership" that will allow Britain to keep open the prospect of a similar free-trade accord to the one Canada has with the EU.

Reports at the weekend suggested that the EU is now ready to contemplate concessions which would keep all of the United Kingdom in a temporary customs union following the end of a transition period due to end on December 31 2020.

He said that an all-UK customs union would not breach the EU's red lines.

But Britain's Conservative government and its Northern Irish ally, the Democratic Unionist Party, won't accept that because it would mean customs and regulatory checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Mrs May is expected to brief the Cabinet on progress in talks when members gather for their weekly meeting at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday.

A spokesman insisted: 'Nothing has been agreed'.
