Google CEO announces new action plan following Andy Rubin fiasco

Google walkout

Further, Google says it will implement an Investigations Practice Guide that will outline how investigations will be handled and what employees can expect from the process.

In an attempt to address a key criticism of how the company failed to adequately deal with sexual assault claims when made against senior management, the CEO said Google will make arbitration optional for individual sexual harassment and sexual assault claims.

Google bowed to one of the protesters' main demands by dropping mandatory arbitration of all sexual misconduct cases.

At the technology giant's London office near King's Cross station, a crowd of around 100 workers congregated outside.

You can read the email in its entirety here. "It's clear we need to make some changes".

The company also said in a longer document that it would be changing the way it conducts internal investigations, noting that there would now be a "global process that will allow Googlers to be accompanied by a companion during an HR investigation, or when raising/reporting any harassment or discrimination concerns to HR". Those who fall behind in their training, including top executives, will be dinged in their annual performance reviews, leaving a blemish that could lower their pay and make it more hard to get promoted.

On Nov. 1, more than 20,000 Google workers abandoned their cubicles to protest past cases of alleged sexual harassment, following a New York Times report that detailed how the company protected and gave big payouts to male executives accused of misconduct.

The protests were touched off by the company's handling of Android software developer Andy Rubin's departure. The report said Rubin received a $90 million severance package in 2014 even though Google concluded the sexual misconduct allegations against him were credible.

Like its Silicon Valley peers, Google has already openly acknowledged that its workforce is too heavily concentrated with white and Asian men, especially in the highest paying executive and computer programming jobs.

Most notably, it did not comment on calls for Google's board to have an employee representative, and for the company's chief diversity officer to report directly to the chief executive.

Google isn't addressing another one of the protesters' grievance because it believes it doesn't have merit.
