The Cliffsofmoher euthanased on track after Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup was again been marred by the death of a horse on Tuesday, this time the Irish-trained The Cliffsofmoher.

Appleby's Melbourne Cup win came just days after he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday with Line of Duty, surviving an inquiry/objection.

There was a sad tale to the 2018 Melbourne Cup with the Aidan O'Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher breaking down going past the winning post the first time. Racing Victoria vets found he was lame in the near foreleg after the race.

The horse was put down as a result of the injuries sustained.

Equine Veterinarians Australia spokesman Ian Fulton, who was in attendance at Flemington, said Moore's actions should be praised.

"Our thoughts are with animal lovers across the country who have been affected by this loss, and confronted by the very real risks posed by racing to the horses involved", RSPCA Australia spokesperson Jane Speechley said.

Wagering services run by Sportsbet, Ladbrokes and online betting exchange Betfair all went down, with punters temporarily unable to place bets on their smartphone apps or computers.

"It was just an awesome effort by the jockey that needs to be acknowledged".

"It is with sadness that we confirm that The Cliffsofmoher had to be humanely euthanised after sustaining a fractured right shoulder", racetrack executive general manager Jamie Stier said.

The most catastrophic year for the race was 2014, when six-year-old Japanese thoroughbred Admire Rakti collapsed straight after the Melbourne Cup and died in its stall, while Araldo broke his leg on a fence after taking fright and was euthanased.

Leading jockey Hugh Bowman has been slapped with a one-month suspension for three separate offences following his Melbourne Cup ride aboard Marmelo.

The Melbourne Cup and America's Kentucky Derby have long eluded Sheikh Mohammed.

The condition of The CliffsofMoher, which was being ridden by star English jockey Ryan Moore, is not yet known.

Racing Victoria said these incidents occurred "infrequently" and insisted Victoria has one of the "best safety records in the world in racing".
