Girl, 10, charged over baby death after 'stamping on head at daycare'

UPDATE: 10-year-old girl appears in Chippewa Co. Court, pending charges on infant death

A ten-year-old girl has been charged with killing a baby at a daycare centre in the US.

The girl, who has not been named, is accused of inflicting a fatal head-wound on the infant which left him bleeding. She is now being tried in adult court.

It has not been revealed whether or not she has a relationship with the victim, with officials also refusing to say which daycare center the tragedy happened at. Her bond was set at $50 000 (around R700 000).

The six-month-old was taken to Gillette Children's Hospital in Saint Paul, where he died two days later on 1 November.

Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk says the girl, who lives with foster parents at the home, told investigators the baby's head hit a footstool, and that she stomped on the baby's head in panic when it cried.

"Later that afternoon, the sheriff's department received a call from medical personnel, a doctor, attending this youth and his belief was that the injuries sustained by the 6-month-old boy were not an accident", Kowalczyk said, according to KTLA sister station WITI in Milwaukee.

The girl appeared in Chippewa County Circuit Court on Monday morning in handcuffs and wearing a black hoodie.

"She stated she was holding the child and that's when she dropped [him]", Newell said.
