First Flu Death of Season Reported in San Diego

Windsor-Essex has its first confirmed case of influenza early November

Pneumonia vaccines will also be available at the Flu Clinic at the Senior Center. About 80 percent of the deaths were in children who had not received a flu vaccine.

Dr. Frank Illuzzi, chief medical officer at CityMD, and a board-certified physician in emergency medicine, recommends patients speak with their medical providers about the different flu vaccine options to determine which one is the best fit for them.

People who are eligible for a free flu vaccination include: Adults aged 65 and over; Adults aged 18-64 with long-term conditions such as COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease or those who have had a stroke; Pregnant women; Children aged 2-3 years; Children in school years: reception, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5; Carers; Health and social care workers. When "flu season" strikes varies on a yearly basis, but flu activity begins to heighten in October, peaking between December and February, and tapers by May.

Since the 2004-05 season, vaccines' effectiveness has varied from 10 to 60 percent.

Every year, a vaccine offers protection, but fewer than half of all adults get one. China Securities Journal cited data from the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control saying that in the first three quarters of this year, health authorities approved a total of 7.35 million doses of flu vaccine, half as many as over the same period last year.

We know a lot about the flu virus and humans' immune responses to it.

Now, I'm sure I've lost many of you with the mention of "the flu shot".

The Florida Department of Health in Bay is offering free flu vaccines following Hurricane Michael. The surface of flu viruses is studded with proteins called hemagglutinins, which are the part of the virus that binds to cells in a person's respiratory tract, initiating infection.

Within the population, a vaccine's effectiveness varies widely because it is affected by the general health and age of the recipient.

But exactly how strong the shot should be, and whether additional injections would boost immunity, requires more study.

During the 2017-2018 season, 147,901 influenza vaccines were distributed. "The other thing is if the strain has changed enough, the vaccine doesn't cover it all, or, if the strain wasn't expected appears, then obviously we tend to get worse years in terms of number of cases than anticipated".
