Final Fantasy XV DLC plans canceled amid Hajime Tabata's departure

World of Final Fantasy Maxima Out Now For Xbox One

Square Enix held a Final Fantasy XV live stream to make some important announcements about the title, heading it up with the announcement that Game Director Hajime Tabata was resigning from Luminous Productions and Square Enix. However, the decision comes at what could be a much higher cost for the company as Director Hajime Tabata, who shepherded the troubled project through to completion has resigned and now plans to start up his own company. With Tabata taking leave of the company and the Final Fantasy XV project, three of the four planned DLC expansions have been cancelled.

In addition, the program announced that it will release a standalone game version of the Final Fantasy XV "Comrades" DLC as Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer: Comrades on December 13 (December 12 in North America), with sales of the original "Comrade" DLC to stop on the same date. All except Episode Ardyn have been cancelled, with Ardyn still planned for its March 2019 release. However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is. This loss was announced in a financial statement alongside an explanation that Luminous would now move to making new AAA games, and it's now clear what it relates to. "The desire is to deliver this new AAA experience to everyone even a day [sic] sooner, and due to this directional change, the company chose to focus our resources on the development of this AAA title".

Final Fantasy XV released in 2016 with a season pass containing extra content, but season pass holders won't be missing out, as it appears everything that was promised has been released.

What do you think about Tabata's resignation and Square Enix's announcements on Final Fantasy XV? Only hours prior to the announcement Square Enix Holdings reported an "extraordinary loss" in finances through Luminous Productions - amounting to 3,733 million yen.
