FDA could ban some e-cigarette flavors next week

US FDA to announce ban on flavoured e-cigarettes as soon as next week: Report

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is pushing back against the unchecked growth of the e-cigarette industry.

The FDA moves are being spurred by preliminary government data showing e-cigarette use rose 77 percent among high schoolers and almost 50 percent among middle schoolers in 2018.

From one teen to the next, e-cigarettes, or vaping, has skyrocketed in popularity.

The FDA will continue to permit that flavor to be sold because menthol is permitted in regular cigarettes as well, and the agency doesn't want to give traditional cigarettes an advantage over e-cigarettes in the retail setting.

Although vaping is generally considered a less unsafe alternative to smoking traditional tobacco products, health officials have warned nicotine in e-cigarettes is harmful to developing brains.

The FDA launched a crackdown on flavored e-cigarettes earlier this year, as the number of teens using the products reached epidemic proportions, The Times reported.

At the same time, vaping devotees and "harm reduction" advocates have said e-cigarettes represent s powerful tool in helping adult smokers to quit more risky cigarettes.

E-cig companies say they can help adults stop smoking real cigarettes and that they're not intended for kids. It also said it cracked down on 1,300 retailers who illegally sold e-cigarettes to minors.

Use of the devices has skyrocketed especially with young people, according to the FDA.

Health advocates have anxious about the popularity of vaping products among kids, especially e-cigarettes with mint, fruit, chocolate or any number of other flavorings sold online and at convenience stores, gas stations and vape shops. Some focus on the potential for the products to shift lifelong smokers onto less harmful nicotine products, while others fear they risk drawing a new generation into nicotine addiction.
