England trounce Sri Lanka in Galle Test

Ben Foakes

England crushed Sri Lanka by 211 runs with a day to spare in winning a test in Galle for the first time on Friday.

The hosts, chasing a notional 462 victory, were all out for 250 on day four, with Moeen Ali taking four wickets and Jack Leach three.

The second match of the three-Test series is in Kandy, starting on Nov. 14, before the final contest in Colombo from November 23.

"Jonny, fully fit, would have played this Test match, probably would have performed well, done well with the gloves and scored runs and we wouldn't be having this conversation", insisted Prior. They played some outstanding cricket.

In England's second innings an assured unbeaten 146 by Keaton Jennings, his first century since a ton on his 2016 debut that has silenced his critics for now at least, allowed Root to declare at 322 for six.

"It was a very good wicket but our batting was below-par", Chandimal said, adding it was not the farewell that he and his team mates had imagined for Herath.

Sri Lanka´s spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunge said however that the hosts still have a chance to win, in part because the notorious Galle wicket is behaving differently this time. "We will work very hard now before that second Test match and hopefully back up a really good performance".

"We've done our homework and made sure we came here knowing how we were going to try and approach things", said Root.

Stokes took out Dhananjaya de Silva (21) with the last ball before lunch to put England in complete control heading into the afternoon session and more steady progress followed.

Karunaratne had been given an early life by Ben Stokes at slip, England's best catcher grassing one off Moeen Ali, but did not cash in.

After the break Kusal Mendis hit Leach for four over his head but attempting a repeat the next ball skied the ball to Ali, departing for an otherwise impressive 46.

However, Sri Lanka's team management will give Dinesh Chandimal every opportunity to heal before the second Test.

Tea provided Sri Lanka some respite, but Moeen laid down a marker with the dismissal of Niroshan Dickwella (16) in his first spell of the third session.

Another fine Moeen delivery saw Akila Dananjaya (8) edge to Stokes and then Adil Rashid (1-59) belatedly got in on the act, Dilruwan Perera (30) gone before Rangana Herath was rescued by an appeal after the on-field umpire had the retiring star out first ball. "After reducing them to 100 for five, if you had given only another 150 runs for the next five batters, we would have been still in the game at this stage".

Hathurusingha was not unhappy with Sri Lanka's positive intent, even when they were batting to save a Test.
