Don't touch Russian Federation investigation, Mitt Romney tells Trump

FILE- Attorney General Jeff Sessions accompanied by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein speaks at a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington

Republicans warned Trump past year against replacing Sessions, but some of that resistance appeared to break down by late August, when several key GOP senators signaled to Trump that he could find a new attorney general after the midterm elections.

Sessions departs as the nation's top law enforcement officer while Special Counsel Robert Mueller, operating under the auspices of the Justice Department, pursues a wide-ranging Russian Federation investigation that already has yielded a series of criminal charges against several of Trump's associates and has dogged his presidency.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is being considered by President Trump to become the next US attorney general, two national news services are reporting.

Bondi's spokesman declined to say whether she is under consideration for the top Justice Department job.

Mr Whitaker expressed concerns over the investigation.

"Everybody is in love", he said at a White House press conference.

Sessions took the lead in imposing Trump's travel ban targeting a number of mostly Muslim nations, canceling the so-called Dreamer program that let the children of undocumented immigrants remain in the USA and forcing the separation of migrant families as part of a border crossing crackdown.

"It should end because it's very bad for our country", he said. It culminated in the White House later banning a CNN reporter who questioned the President aggressively on why he insisted on calling a migrant caravan that is hundreds of miles from the U.S. border an 'invasion'.

"For me, I saw the impact of marijuana on our border", he said, presumably referring to his time as a U.S. attorney.

"The question is: did the reporter make contact or not?" A permanent replacement will be named at a later point, a second tweet from the president said.

Christie shocked the Republican establishment after he endorsed then-candidate Donald Trump for president in February 2016 and joined Trump's campaign.

There has also been a question mark over Mr Rosenstein's future since it was alleged that he had discussed invoking a constitutional clause to oust President Trump.

"It was supposed to be on collusion".

Phil Sawyer said he's been concerned about Trump's politics for some time. "I'm saddened by the way people vote and where the country has gone. Had nothing to do with my campaign".

Trump "crossed a red line" in appointing Whitaker to oversee the Mueller probe, the group wrote on its website.

Sessions had recused himself from the investigation, because of his own contacts with Russians during the 2016 campaign, instead handing responsibility for Mueller to his deputy Rod Rosenstein. An infuriated Trump responded by repeatedly and publicly seeking to humiliate Sessions. Whitaker has spoken critically about the Mueller probe and spoke in a TV interview about choking off its funding.

In 2017 he even used Trump's words, warning against Mueller engaging in a "witch hunt".

The change of leadership at the DOJ came one day after Democrats won control of the House of Representatives, meaning Trump will face more oversight than he has under the Republican-controlled Congress.

While he occasionally offered to work with the Democrats, he also said fairly bluntly that if they insisted on investigating him and his administration through the House, he would retaliate through the Senate and the executive power vested in him.

"If the president seeks to interfere in the impartial administration of justice, the Congress must stop him".

Republicans, however, have been mostly silent. Senator Susan Collins and Mitt Romney said it should not be impeded in any way.
