Donald Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Sessions looks out towards Mexico as he stands by a secondary border fencer during visit to the U.S. Mexic

Just days after President Donald Trump appointed Jeff Sessions's Chief of Staff Matthew Whitaker to take over Sessions's role as attorney general, Whitaker has changed his Twitter account to private status.

For almost 18 months, Rosenstein has overseen the special counsel's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election because Sessions had stepped aside from all matters related to the presidential campaign.

Then there's his association with a Florida company that Federal Trade Commission said bilked thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars by promising lucrative patent agreements to investors, the New York Times reported. But some constitutional scholars have questioned the legality of the appointment, citing a constitutional requirement that the attorney general must be approved by the Senate.

"Mr. Whitaker is a political appointee who is not serving in a Senate-confirmed position in the Justice Department".

Trump abruptly altered the chain of command above Mueller on Wednesday, putting his work under the supervision of a Republican loyalist who has been openly skeptical of the special counsel's authority and has mused about ways to curtail his power.

Overseeing it all is Whitaker, a former college football player and US attorney from Iowa who was brought into the Justice Department a year ago to serve as Sessions' chief of staff.

The Mueller probe should not extend to the finances of Trump, his family or their business, the Trump Organization, he argued.

Charles Larson, a former chairman of the Iowa Republican Party, said Whitaker has briefed Trump and done "an impressive job".

The Senate's top Republican predicted a permanent replacement could be named soon for Whitaker, who is now overseeing the Trump-Russia probe.

The reality, I think, is that Mueller is finally about ready to wrap up his investigation of the core issues he's been interested in - alleged collusion and alleged obstruction of justice.

Trump has called the investigation a witch hunt, and both he and Russian Federation deny colluding.

Rosenstein told reporters Friday that based on his experiences with Whitaker, "I think he's a superb choice for attorney general".

Whitaker's appointment came at a crucial moment.

In the president's orbit, there remains some concern about his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., though there are no outward indications that charges are imminent, according to a Republican close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Trump has repeatedly asserted that the Mueller investigation is no more than a "witch hunt" against him, in which the mainstream news media is a zealous collaborator and peddler of "fake news".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has had a contentious relationship with Trump in the past, is now still overseeing the Russian Federation probe. Whitaker has no such restriction - though some believe he should.

Whitaker's appointment left many anxious that Mueller could be shut down before he concludes his investigation.

At the same time, Trump appeared to distance himself slightly from Whitaker, rejecting reports that they have met a number of times inside the White House.

Sessions said in a letter to Trump that he had resigned at the president's request.

He also called Whitaker "a very highly respected man".

Of the scrutiny Whitaker is facing, Trump said, "It's a shame that no matter who I put in they go after".
