Doctors have called the drinks, "killing" the vessels

Energy drinks

Now, with new research, the investigators from the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston claims that even a single energy drink can create harmful effects on blood vessel function. "A lot of young kids use energy drinks when they exercise, a time when you need your arterial function to be at its top", said lead researcher Dr. John Higgins.

A new study by medical school McGovern in Houston, which will be presented at the meeting of the American heart Association in Chicago next week, proved that drinking just one drink can lead to negative consequences for the blood vessels. This greatly hinders the blood flow and tissue oxygenation.

And a February 2018 study from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, found that half of Canadian teenagers who consumed energy drinks reported experiencing health problems, including rapid heartbeat, nausea, and in rare cases, seizures.

Vessels become less flexible as the cells that line them respond to food and drink derived fats and sugars circulating in the blood. In addition, people under 18, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, caffeine-sensitive individuals, those taking stimulants or caffeine-based drugs or those with heart disease should stay away from energy drinks, he added. The study included 44 healthy, non-smoking medical students in their 20s.

According to a new study, young, healthy men and women experienced notably diminished function soon after consuming a single regular 24 USA oz can - equivalent to almost three 250ml cans of Red Bull cans or one-and-a-half 500ml cans of Monster Energy. Some researchers think adverse effects on the cardiovascular system may be associated with the effects the drinks have on endothelial function.

Before consuming the drink (and one and a half hours afterward), the team tested the students' artery flow-mediated dilation. But, Katz said, "this is a small study looking only at acute effects and can not be considered proof that energy drinks injure the cardiovascular system over time". At the initial stage of expansion vessels averaged 5.1% in diameter.

Sales of the energy drinks in the United Kingdom increased by 185 per cent between 2006 and 2015, making the market worth more than £2 billion. "Nothing in this preliminary research counters this well-established fact."The study findings are scheduled for presentation November 12 at a meeting of the American Heart Association, in Chicago".
