Death toll rises as California wildfires wreak devastation

The 70,000-acre Woolsey Fire tore through Malibu mansions and working-class suburban homes in Southern California's hills and canyons. Officials said two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

The dead were found inside their cars and outside vehicles or homes after a desperate evacuation that Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea called "the worst-case scenario".

The fast-moving blaze has destroyed the Northern California town of Paradise, killed at least nine people and sent smoke billowing across much of the state.

In the south, a smoky haze still hung in blue skies, with the vicious winds that drove the flames in their first two days gone and expected to stay away until Sunday. Firefighters are trying to battle two separate fires from raging through upscale homes and neighborhoods. In Los Angeles and Ventura counties, a significant number of homes were destroyed or damaged, fire officials said.

But with the winds returning, it is likely more homes would be lost, Mr Osby warned.

With the fire jumping the freeway Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol shut down a four-mile stretch of the 101 Freeway between Las Virgenes to Kanan roads.

The Camp Fire ignited Thursday morning in Pulga, a tiny community in Butte County nestled in the Plumas National Forest, and strong winds fanned the flames overnight, sending thousands of residents fleeing for their lives.

Three wildfires are seen burning in California on Friday.

Three more bodies were discovered outside of residences and a fourth inside a residence, Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Steve Kaufmann said on Friday night.

Also affected is the city of Thousand Oaks, which is still recovering from the recent mass shooting.

"It's devastating. It's like 'welcome to hell, ' " resident Cynthia Ball said about the dual disasters while she was outside the teen center serving as a shelter for evacuees. And now, they've frightened some of your brothers and sisters out into the roadways and I don't know where they are. "It's like we're all walking around kind of in a trance".

According to the authorities, have evacuated more than 150 thousand people.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu, revealed she was forced to flee her home.

A total of 6,453 homes had been destroyed in Paradise and elsewhere, Honea said, along with 260 commercial buildings.

"The flames were whipping and spreading so fast", Vaughan told CNN.

Pulga, Concow, Magalia, Stirling City as well as the entire town of Paradise were among the areas that remained under mandatory evacuation orders Friday. Some flights began at 5:30 a.m.as the wind died down, but winds quickly began picking up again as dawn broke. "Well, it's been going for 100 years, but we don't know - there's no town now".

"There are times when you have such rapid-moving fires ... no amount of planning is going to result in a flawless scenario, and that's what we had to deal with here", Mr Honea told the Action News Network.
