CUPW continues strike action in Ottawa, expands to Outaouais

20181101 postal picket line

The strike at the Kitchener-Waterloo local comes a day after CUPW called for a national overtime ban, meaning postal workers can refuse to work beyond their normal eight-hour days.

Postal workers in St. John's have walked off the job, joining the series of rotating strikes happening across the country.

The Ontario communities of Arnprior-Renfrew and Ottawa are still on strike, as well as the British Columbia cities of Campbell River, Courtenay, Nanaimo and Port Alberni.

"We've seen that many allies, whether they're in the labour movement, anti-poverty, or just the general public, want to support postal workers, so this rally is a chance for people to actually come out and show the government that it's time to end the strike and to support postal workers".

Canada Post says there will be no mail delivery or pick-up in communities impacted by the CUPW strike action.

Canada Post said it has made "significant offers" to the union, including "increased wages, job security and improved benefits", without asking for any concessions.

"We are out here today because Canada Post has refused to negotiate with us on our contract".

CUPW National President Mike Palecek says "this is a health and safety issue rooted in poor staffing". "This has got to be fixed".

Combined, the three key locations can process one million parcels a day from across the country, Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton has said.

CUPW members are still without agreements for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining unit after nearly a year of negotiations.

Last Tuesday, Labour Minister Patty Hajdu appointed Morton Mitchnick, a former chairman of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, to help the two parties resolve their differences.
