China open for trade talks with US

CHINA-US-DIPLOMACY

Pompeo also reiterated USA criticism of China's "repression of religious groups", citing treatment of Buddhists in Tibet and minority Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region that has drawn condemnation from human rights groups.

As the world today is undergoing unprecedented changes that have not been seen in the past 100 years, it is the global community's expectation that China-U.S. relations will continue to move forward in the right direction, the Chinese president said.

Top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi (YAHNG jee-uh-CHERR) is making his government's position clear after the latest round of U.S.

The conversations were held in an atmosphere of responsibility and respect, according to Mr. Pompeo, who acknowledged that China and the U.S. face "significant differences between our nations" in such areas as trade, due to the mutual imposition of billions of dollars in tariffs.

Pompeo said in a joint press conference following the two-day dialogue that, despite differences on a wide range of issues, there remain areas for cooperation, including on North Korea.

Despite the officials' frank airing of their differences, both sides are stressing the need to lower tensions that have flared amid a trade dispute between the world's two largest economies.

In late September, U.S. and Chinese vessels almost collided off near a disputed reef.

Pompeo took aim at China over its continued building of military installations on artificial islands and reefs in the South China Sea, where China insists it has sovereignty despite competing claims from some smaller neighbors.

"And we made clear that the United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows", Mattis said.

News agency AFP reports that today's delayed meeting in Washington comes weeks before US President Donald Trump is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinpingon the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Argentina. "Rather, we want to make sure China acts responsibly and fairly".

In July 2016, the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) issued a landmark ruling that Beijing's expansive "nine-dash line" claim to the South China Sea had no legal basis.

Calling Kissinger an old friend of Chinese people, Xi hailed the "historic contribution" he has made to China-U.S. relations. "Confrontation and conflict between the two militaries will spell disaster for us all". Beijing has retaliated with tariffs on $110 million worth of USA goods.

"Both sides should seek an appropriate solution through equal and mutually beneficial negotiations", said Yang, adding that the essence of China, U.S. trade and economic ties is mutually beneficial.

The talks were due to be held in Beijing last month but were postponed after Washington announced new arms sales to Taiwan, and after a Chinese destroyer came close to the USS Decatur in late September in what the U.S. Navy called an "unsafe and unprofessional maneuver".

"There is no such problem of freedom of navigation and overflights being obstructed, so to use this issue as an excuse to military action is unjustifiable", he said.

China and the United States have slapped tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other's goods, jolting global financial markets, and Trump has threatened to set tariffs on the remainder of China's $500 billion-plus exports to the United States if the trade dispute can not be resolved.

Xi told former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger that he and Trump would have "a deep exchange of views" in Argentina, according to the Chinese state news agency.

Mattis called the talks "candid" and said that the two militaries looked to improve communication and avoid "miscalculation" at sea.

"Foreign countries have no right to interfere", he said.
