CDC Warns Of Another Romaine-Centered E. Coli Alert

E. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce prompts nationwide warning from CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have now warned US and Canadian consumers not to eat romaine lettuce after 32 people in 11 states were infected with a strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

The warning comes just months after romaine lettuce was linked to E.coli which sickened dozens across the country, and even led to five deaths.

Thirteen people were hospitalized, including one person who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

It doesn't matter where the romaine is from or even if you or a loved one has eaten some and not gotten sick. "This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available". 18 people in Canada have also fallen ill.

Additionally, you should make sure to wash and sanitize drawers or shelves in refrigerators where romaine was stored.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 32 people have become ill from a strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli in 11 states from October 8 through October 31.

The Food and Drug Administration says it's working with officials in Canada, where people are also being warned to stay away from romaine lettuce.

"The most recent illness onset in the U.S.in the current outbreak was October 31, 2018", the FDA said, adding that there are 11 states in the US with cases.

All types and brands of romaine lettuce are suspect because no common grower, supplier, distributor or source company has been identified by the CDC.

The advisory is not linked to another multistate outbreak of the same bacteria in romaine lettuce, which sickened at least 53 people across 16 states this past spring. "This takes an average of two to three weeks", the CDC said.

Write down what you ate in the week before you started to get sick.
