CC Sabathia, New York Yankees agree on one-year contract

J.A. Happ and CC Sabathia

Sabathia and NY had reached the agreement Tuesday, subject to a successful physical.

An ejection in his final start of the regular season cost Sabathia a $500,000 bonus that he would have earned for reaching 155 innings pitched. Sabathia pitches with a brace on the knee and needs periodic injections there during the season.

Sabathia's desire to stay in NY for what's expected to be his final season was apparent, as he turned down other opportunities to remain a Yankee, the source said.

He is 129-80 for the Yankees, and his new deal boosts his pay from NY to $229 million over 11 seasons.

Brian Cashman wants to bring CC Sabathia back for an 11th season with the New York Yankees, and he's also holding out some hope of re-signing J.A. Happ.

He took a cut in salary from $25 million in 2017 to $10 million in '18. Sabathia was suspended the first five games of 2019 but has appealed. The team was under the luxury tax in 2018, hovering right below the $197 million threshold with $192.1 million.

Needless to say, Cashman and Co. recognize that starting pitching is a major need fresh off a 100-win season that saw NY put up historic numbers on offense. Voit, acquired from St. Louis on July 28, hit.333 with 14 homers and 33 RBIs in 39 games. Francred's Jon Heyman said the Yankees are interested in all three pitchers.

Both can be optioned to the minors next year. Gray, a right-hander who turns 29 this week, was unhappy with the harsh treatment he was given by demanding Yankees fans.

"I love it here obviously", Sabathia said. "It's not working. I'm not going to be willing to continue to walk through the fire and expect it to be a different result". "I think the hunger and the effort, the passion's there, despite the awful outcome that took place in the World Series this year". "He's a very successful major leaguer, and it's just going to happen somewhere else".
