California wildfires kill 9; celebrities, others flee beach city

Southern California fires force evacuation of Malibu

A wildfire that moved so fast firefighters didn't even try to stop it killed five people, authorities said Friday as the blaze quadrupled in size after leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people.

Photos from the area show devastation on a horrifying scale.

In a move that has surprised literally nobody, Trump has responded to the disturbing fire by threatening to remove federal funding for those responsible for managing forests in California.

Given the fires' rapid movement and volatile conditions, The Los Angeles Times is maintaining a live feed with the most current data available.

Fire officials couldn't estimate how many buildings were lost from the so-called Woolsey Fire burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, but said they were expected to be significant.

Captain Scott McLean, of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also said there was "really no firefight involved", explaining the crews had to give up attacking the flames and turn their attention to helping people get out alive.

At least nine people have died in what has been called California's most 'destructive fire in a century'.

The L.A. Times reported that a total of 75,000 homes in both Ventura and Los Angeles counties are now under mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders, including Westlake Village and parts of Calabasas, where numerous entertainers including Alyssa Milano and Kim Kardashian have lavish homes.

Elsewhere in Ventura County, mere miles to the west, another wildfire ignited within an hour of the Woolsey Fire. Staff at the Los Angeles Zoo, which is located in the park, were preparing animals to be evacuated.

"This event was the worst-case scenario".

Five people have died during massive wildfires in the U.S. state of California, a representative of the Butte County Sheriff's office told Sputnik. "Regrettably, not everybody made it out".

The fire broke out on Thursday north west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the U.S. 101 freeway early on Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

He said another 35 people were missing and three firefighters had been injured. Some people abandoned their cars and ran for their lives.

The Camp Fire, which broke out on Thursday at the edge of the Plumas National Forest northeast of Sacramento, has since blackened more than 90,000 acres and was only five percent contained as of nightfall on Friday.

Thousands of residents took to the Pacific Coast Highway to head south or took refuge on beaches, along with their horses and other pets. "All residents must evacuate now".

Malibu and nearby Calabasas are home to many celebrities and some have been posting on social media.

A separate blaze, Hill Fire, had also devastated 10,000 acres by Thursday night, fire officials said.

"It's my sad duty to confirm that we now have a total of nine fatalities", he said, four more fatalities beyond the five reported earlier.
