Burgess banned for four matches after eye gouging incident

Dallin Watene Zelezniak brushed off the eye-gouge incident post-match

The England prop's punishment comes after he ploughed his fingers inside the eye socket of Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak during their second test at Liverpool.

The incident, which occurred 20 minutes from the end of the match, went unpunished by referee Gerard Sutton and Watene-Zelezniak brushed off the clash in his post-match interviews.

England star George Burgess has issued an apology, via his twitter account, to anyone who "thinks bad of me" after he was banned for 4 matches for a Grade D behaviour contrary to the spirit of the game charge following an alleged 'eye gouging ' incident in the 2nd half of Sunday's global against the Kiwis.

The suspension will rule Burgess out of England's third and final Test against New Zealand this weekend, as well as the first three matches the Bunnies play in 2019.

George Burgess has learnt his fate after being cited for a "cowardly" act that overshadowed England's rugby league Test win against New Zealand. "I have too much respect for the players I play against and with".

Mayhew says Burgess' fingers were looking for the eye and the outcome could have been catastrophic.

Despite Watene-Zelezniak dismissing suggestions Burgess had gouged him during the match at Anfield, Burgess was still summoned before a disciplinary panel. Whatever he gave me it helped a lot. I think his whole hand would probably cover my whole face.

The suspension means he will miss South's first three games in next year's NRL competition.

"I'm sure he didn't do it on objective". He and his brothers are good guys and have done really good things in the game.

"I'm pretty sweet now".

Burgess was recalled by England from a two-year absence for the opening autumn global against France and he also played in both games against the Kiwis so far.
