British Prime Minister Theresa May: Ousting me risks delaying Brexit

Pro and anti Brexit protesters hold placards as they vie for media attention near Parliament in London Friday Nov. 16 2018

Amid a string of resignations and huge backlash from rebel MPs, Prime Minister Theresa May still believes her draft Brexit deal with the European Union will help secure British jobs, protect borders, and smooth the UK's exit from the bloc.

"It's 2018. It's the year that people dial (emergency number) 999 because KFC ran out of chicken", he told Sky News.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that former Tory London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith and veteran Brexiter Sir Bill Cash had written to Brady, bringing the running total of MPs openly expressing no confidence in the prime minister to 25.

The appointments late on Friday round off an extraordinary week in which seven members of her government quit their posts, and a plot to oust her from power gathered momentum.

"After two years of hard work, we are now arriving at what I firmly believe is the right deal for Britain ..."

Dominic Raab, who resigned Thursday, suggested that May failed to stand up to bullying European Union officials.

Stephen Barclay, who until yesterday was a junior health minister but had previously served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury, replaced Dominic Raab, who resigned on Thursday over the draft plan for leaving the EU.

Discussing the terms of the UK's departure, the PM said: "This isn't about me, this is about the national interest".

She had managed to secure cabinet approval for the draft Brexit deal after a five-hour meeting at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday, but it was followed by a string of high-profile resignations.

Another ex-cabinet minister and close ally of Mrs May, the former first secretary of state Damian Green, said a leadership change would be "absurd".

Theresa May has faced heavy criticism from all parties after publishing the draft Withdrawal Agreement. If she fails, the risk is that Britain tumbles out of the bloc in March without any deal to smooth the process.

The draft withdrawal agreement has prompted widespread criticism and fear that the United Kingdom's economy will sustain serious damage if a better deal for its exit from the European Union can not be reached. And the country would not be able to unilaterally pull out of the arrangement.

Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of a group of 60 pro-Brexit Tories, on Thursday said he had sent a formal letter demanding a vote of no confidence in Mrs May's leadership, with other lawmakers following suit.

As furious Conservative rebels try to gather the numbers to trigger a no-confidence vote, May insisted she hadn't considered quitting.

"Victoria does not know, nor do the two vice chairman of the 1922 Committee or the other officers", he said.

"Some politicians get so embroiled in the intricacies of their argument they forget it is not about this theory or that theory, or does it make me look good".

After talking about the domesticity of home and family life, May, said the Mail, went onto the defensive when the topic turned to Brexit. "Compromising is essential to avoid a damaging no deal and move on to the future".

The majority (58 per cent) thought that a future leader should have supported Leave at the referendum, however, with only 14 per cent disagreeing. "The important thing is that we're here for our constituents and as prime minister I'm here for the people of this country".
