Humbled by public generosity giving him the opportunity to turn his life around, "Trolley Man" made a decision to face the music and turn himself in to police.

Michael Rogers, aka Trolley Man, was hailed as a hero after he repeatedly rammed Bourke Street attacker Hassan Khalif Shire Ali with a shopping trolley as Shire Ali slashed at police officers.

The act prompted a crowdfunding campaign to help the homeless man back on his feet - that raised in excess of $100,000.

After media reports the police were seeking to question him, Rogers turned himself in on Friday night and was served with five charges relating to recent burglaries in the central Melbourne area.

Police confirmed on Saturday a man had been charged with two counts of burglary, two of theft and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

Included in the list of offences is the alleged theft of a $2,000 bike from an apartment building, and a smash and grab into a cafe the day previous to the terror attack on November 9, according to the Herald Sun. "I didn't quite get him down, though".

The 46-year-old has since been granted bail, against the advice of police who believe Mr Rogers poses an unacceptable risk of re-offending because of his criminal history.

She explained to the court how Rogers had become the subject of a community fundraiser in the wake of his selfless efforts against IS-inspired knifeman Shire Ali.

A lawyer appearing briefly on his behalf said Rogers was homeless and had ongoing drug issues.

The $106,000 (AUD 145,000) raised will be held in a trust account for Rogers, the charity said, to ensure he is "well taken care of and guided financially as he moves forward".

She said Rogers was humbled by the generosity, which is what compelled him to turn himself into police.
