Backers of Brexit funding campaign investigated for "suspected criminal offences"

Banks Fishing As Investigation Launches In UK

The businessman Arron Banks is under renewed pressure to explain the source of the millions of pounds used to fund the pro-Brexit Leave.EU campaign.

Banks, a prominent Brexiter, was referred to the National Crime Agency (NCA) on Thursday by the Electoral Commission which said it had found evidence of "multiple suspected offences" committed during the 2016 referendum.

In turn, the Electoral Commission released its own statement confirming that they made the reference to the NCA over a £2 million (US$2.58 million) loan to BFTC, which ran Leave.EU, by Banks and his group of insurance companies.

Banks and Leave.EU chief executive Liz Bilney deny any wrongdoing.

On Sunday, Mr Banks denied fresh newspaper allegations that he might have misled parliament over links between one of his insurance companies and the Leave.EU campaign.

"I am confident that a full and frank investigation will finally put an end to the ludicrous allegations leveled against me and my colleagues", Banks said.

Channel 4 News reporter Fatima Manji doorstepped the insurance tycoon and former Ukip donor as he left an interview with the BBC's Andrew Marr show in London on Sunday.

"What's not clear is where the money came from to get to that holding company in the first place, because this is a business that in and of itself doesn't generate cash".

He replied: "What I said was that the corruption I have seen in British politics, the sewer that exists and the disgraceful behaviour of the government over what they are doing with Brexit and how they are selling out, means that if I had my time again I think we would have been better to probably remain and not unleash these demons".

"The money came from Rock Services which was a United Kingdom limited company".

He went on: 'I know it's complex for journalists to understand but we know what this is about - it's about undermining Article 50 and the Brexit result. "It was generated out of insurance business written in the United Kingdom".

When pressed further, he said: "Goodbye, I'm not talking to you".

Banks also told Marr he would vote to stay in the European Union if the referendum were to happen again.

Banks said: "I can say that was reported to the Electoral Commission and people who did work for Eldon were transferred over on short-term contracts legally and it was reported through the Electoral Commission in the right way".

Responding to the decision to refer Banks to police, Liberal Democrat lawmaker, Tom Brake, who speaks for his party on Brexit said "people have known for a long time that the Brexiter ranks were filled with dodgy demagogues, today's news will be little surprise".
