At least eleven wounded in shooting at bar in southern California

First responders are seen outside Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks California

By the end of the violent spree, 11 people were dead. Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer were the first to arrive at the bar and went inside just before 11:30 p.m. PST (0730 GMT).

Authorities have not released numerous victims' names but among those who have been confirmed are three men and one woman.

It was "college night" at the bar, and many students were there to learn the country two-step.

The PBS NewsHour will update this story as it develops.

Tom Hanson, 70, who lives next door to Long and his mother, said Thursday that he called the police about six months ago when he heard "heavy-duty banging" and shouting coming from the Longs' home. He was shot inside and later died at a hospital.

Some mistook the gunfire for firecrackers when he began shooting, the New York Times reported.

Dean said the shooter reportedly shot at employees and security before turning on the crowd. A woman in the background added: "He was kind of a loner". She said she hid with a group of strangers and they were holding hands. The university invited the community to gather at the school's chapel.

Jason Coffman wept as he told reporters that his son, Cody, 22, was among the dead.

Law enforcement agencies, firefighters and other first responders, along with several ambulances, additional units from the California Highway Patrol, Simi Valley and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, reached the spot soon after the shooting was reported. "I'll talk to you later".

He worked at a Camarillo moving company called Attention to Detail. She described him as "the sweetest guy".

A neighbor said Long's mother "lived in fear" of what her son might do, saying when police were called to the house earlier this year "it took them about a half a day to get him out of the house". Nearby colleges include California Lutheran University, California State University Channel Islands, Pepperdine University and Moorpark College.

He died trying to save others, a family member told The San Diego Union-Tribune. "He died a hero".

Borderline, a Western-themed establishment known to regularly host country, salsa and swing dancing nights, was hosting a college country night on Wednesday evening.

A mobile phone video Mr Knapp posted on Instagram showed what was believed to be the perpetrator entering a deserted dancefloor and shooting, seemingly at people as they attempted to escape. He is originally from Coronado, Calif.

As soon as the first round of bullets rang out at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Matt Wennerstrom sprung into action, grabbing a bar stool and throwing it through a window to free people to safety. "There's a lot of heartbreak here over the loss of such a warm spirit". He told a news conference Long had likely shot himself and that he was a veteran who had served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

"If you were a victim of a crime, you want him investigating the case", Buschow said.

He and his wife separated in June 2011, while he was deployed on a seven-month tour in Afghanistan.

He became an active member of the veterans community in Los Angeles upon his return.

Helus was immediately hit with multiple gunshots, Dean said.

"It's going to be a very somber day", Steinwender said.
