At least 13 killed in California bar shooting

Police and FBI officers wait outside the home of the suspect in a shooting incident at a Thousand Oaks bar in Newbury Park California U.S. Nov. 8 2018

Also, one of the possibilities investigators are looking into is whether gunman Ian David Long believed his former girlfriend would be at the bar, the official said.

Authorities searched Long's home in Newbury Park, about five miles from the Borderline bar, for clues to what set him off.

According to authorities, the shooter was 28-year-old Ian Long, a former Marine combat veteran who had been stationed in Afghanistan. He's pictured (right) in a photo supplied by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

While serving, Long got married to a woman called Stavroula Tzavaras in June 2009, in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to court records seen by USA Today. He was described to be a bearded man wearing a black jacket, hat, and glasses.

"I know that, being a religious person, that God is never going to give me anything more than I can handle", he said.

The sheriff said Long drove to the bar and shot an unarmed security guard who was standing outside before opening fire at random inside.

"Sergeant Helus was taken to a local hospital where he died from his wounds".

Telemachus Orfanos, 27, died on Thursday and his mother said that she did not want prayers and instead demanded gun control. On his way to the bar, Helus was talking on the phone with his wife, his last words to her as obtained by the Los Angeles Times were "Hon, I got to go, I love you".

When the gunfire was over, 12 people were dead, including a Navy veteran who had lived through the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history a year ago.

"He survived the Vegas massacre past year where he spent the whole night carrying injured and assisting first responders", Krisilas told USA Today.

In one instance, Colell said Long used his fingers to mimic shooting her in the back of the head as she talked to another athlete. He declined to engage on questions on whether the nation needs stricter gun control laws.

"Maybe there was a motive for this particular night, but we have no information leading to that at all", the sheriff said. But 13 months later, another mass shooter killed him. "I already didn't wish it on anybody to begin with for the first time", Kelly said outside his home in Thousand Oaks.

The first victim of the shooting at the bar in Thousands Oaks has been identified as Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus.

About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard "an bad argument" and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs' property.

After leaving High School, Long signed up to the United States' Marine Corps on August 4, 2008, in Los Angeles, a Corps press release said on Thursday.

"All of a sudden we heard the "bang, bang" of the gunshots and it just started going insane and people were pushing".

A short time later, just before 10 a.m., he received the news he said would forever change his life.

Mourners have gathered to hold hands, sing and to wonder how one of the safest cities in America could become a killing zone.
