Argentine Navy Submarine Missing For A Year Found Deep In Atlantic

Argentina submarine: ARA San Juan found

Argentina's navy has announced that searchers have found the missing submarine ARA San Juan deep in the Atlantic a year after it disappeared with 44 crewmen aboard.

President Mauricio Macri told the families of the submariners they should not feel alone and delivered an "absolute and non-negotiable commitment" to find "the truth".

"Now another chapter opens".

The ARA San Juan submarine disappeared 430km (270 miles) off the Argentine coast on 15 November 2017.

The Navy has been fiercely criticised for its handling of the operation since first reporting the submarine overdue at Mar del Plata on November 16. The navy said the blast could have been caused by a "concentration of hydrogen" triggered by the battery problem reported by the captain.

Argentina's navy has now confirmed the wreckage of the submarine has been finally be found after 366 days of searching.

Several senior officers were dismissed, including Navy chief Marcelo Srur, and numerous families have expressed anger and disappointment at the government's efforts to find their missing relatives.

The firm began its search on September 8.

Eight days after the sub vanished, the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation said that it had detected a noise a few hours after the sub's last contact.

A massive worldwide search effort failed to find the vessel, and was eventually scaled back after hopes of finding the crew alive faded.

The ARA San Juan was lost at sea.

Argentina's government bowed to pressure from the families of the missing crew in January by offering $US4.8 million ($A6.5 million) for information leading to the submarine's recovery.

Several grieving mothers of the missing have turned up every morning in a forlorn protest at the sub's home base in Mar del Plata.

The navy had earlier shared a picture from the seabed, suggesting a 60m-long object might be the missing submarine.

Experts say the sub would have been crushed by water pressure once it dropped below about 600 meters.
