Angry U.S. voters head to midterm polls in referendum on Trump

Pres. Trump: Republican Party Will Do Well In Upcoming Elections

Just as everyone expected Schumer to be the Senate's Majority Leader at the close of the 2016 campaign, only to see Democratic victories melt into defeats in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Indiana, I would be surprised but not shocked to see McConnell meet the same fate this year in Missouri, Indiana and Tennessee-and though I had never believed it possible until last week, in Texas. The median House district went for Donald Trump by more than three points, even though he lost the popular vote by two points. The US president's initial victory empowered ideological extremism across much of the Western world.

One message falsely claiming to be from U.S. celebrity Oprah Winfrey called Stacey Abrams in Georgia "a poor man's Aunt Jemima" - referencing a controversial image of a black woman depicted as a slavery-era "mammy" figure - and other racial slurs.

They will have won that majority in part by recruiting and appealing to moderates in Trump country, which will make it more hard to get the progressive agenda passed in the House - and it will go nowhere in a Republican-controlled Senate.

So history is against Donald Trump. Joe Manchin is leading the polls by a strong margin, despite the state going to Trump by 42 percentage points only two years ago.

"I look forward to seeing what happens, because something is going on", the president said in Cleveland, Ohio.

As much as the President will be celebrating, Kyle Kondik says he will also be relieved. That's up near presidential election levels.

Republicans - and President Trump - would counter this be pointing out that they held the Senate or even gained seats (which is rare).

Arizona's race for the state's first female senator seems to only get closer and closer.

"You might see one of the older conservative justices on the Supreme Court, maybe Clarence Thomas, would retire and give the Republicans a chance to confirm a new replacement", he said.

This outcome might not be all roses for the President though. "Don't let them run the okey-doke on you", Obama said Sunday during a campaign stop in Gary, Ind., for Democratic incumbent Sen.

This is the outcome that most experts, and polls, are predicting once the midterms are said and done.

As he departed Washington on Monday, he said Democrats' "weak stand" on the issue "means nothing but crime".

"The investigatory powers of the House will be unleashed on the President and the Executive Branch", he said.

"My guess is they would find things that would paint the President in a negative light". The S&P 500 slumped almost 20 per cent during the government shutdown that occurred during Congress's 2011 debt-ceiling impasse. To lesser extent, traders are also bracing for the possibility that Republicans maintain control over both the House and Senate, or Democrats win control over both in what's been informally named the "blue tsunami". As many as 81 per cent of evangelicals voted for Mr Trump in 2016. Looking exclusively at Trump's approval rating, you would expect them to win up to 41, but allowance needs to be made for the Republicans' recent gerrymandering of district boundaries, which should help them hang on to around five seats that would otherwise flip. Trump and his backers have called it "an invasion" - though the group of a few thousand people, including mothers and children, remains hundreds of miles away - and suggested without proof that there are criminals and terrorists in the crowd of those fleeing violence and poverty.

"If they take the House, that [impeachment] will probably be one of the very first conversations that they have".

He says, "We should vote people in and out, not shout them in and out".

The president last week tweeted the clip, but CNN refused to air it at the weekend, calling it "racist".

As Americans prepare to make their choices in the 6 November pivotal midterms, there are substantive issues like climate change and immigration policies that separate the two main parties. "There could be the threat of a government shutdown", Mr Kondik said.

"They key thing is the Democrats could actually shut down the confirmation process for judicial nominees, which is pretty significant".

There are also several pick up opportunities for House seats for the Democrats here. A serious Republican challenger could try and win the nomination of the party for 2020.

"None of us are indispensable, but some of us are just better at what we do", Pelosi said.

Whether that would fly with Republican voters, and Mr Trump's most loyal supporters, is another argument entirely.
