Americans Prepare to Render Midterm Verdict on Trump

UNITED STATES- SEPTEMBER 14 Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer D-N.Y. and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi D-Calif. attend a news conference on the Child Care for Working Families Act which focuses on affordable early learning and care on Sep

Democratic consultant Jim Manley said Tuesday may reveal if Democrats are having any success recapturing white working class voters in the Midwest who backed Trump in 2016.

"If the Democrats manage to win at least one of the two chambers - there is a fair chance for a House takeover, but the Senate map looks very hard for the Democrats as Philip and Stefan explain - the u.s. will end up with a divided government".

The approach has drawn a push back from some in his party, with Paul Ryan, the top Republican in the House, reportedly urging Mr Trump to focus more on the booming USA economy, which has surpassed 3 per cent growth.

Given Trump's stunning victory in 2016, few were confident in their predictions.

A slim Republican majority in the House would also present challenges, likely inflaming simmering intraparty disputes.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house of Congress, are up for grabs.

The Obama-Trump voters sit between the two parties' bases on a host of issues. Lee Drutman, a scholar at New America, has shown that on views of Muslims, immigration, gender roles, and racial or ethnic minorities, they are much closer to Republicans than they are to their former party. On government intervention in the economy and on general moral issues, they are firmly in the middle.

Trump and Obama are the most popular figures in their parties, and their appearances on the campaign trail are created to stoke enthusiasm among core supporters in the late stages of a midterm congressional election widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first two years in the White House.

But in Indiana, Obama said Republicans were taking credit for the economic renewal that started under his presidency.

Donald Trump has been beating the drum against migrants from Central America.

Support for the president has not, however, automatically translated into support for Republicans.

He said the economy, people, and health care will give the Trump administration credit if Republicans win, even if the press will not. Young voters promised to vote in record numbers as they waged mass protests in the wake of the February mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 students and staff dead.

United States voters will vote to elect new members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, who make up the Congress. They promised hardline immigration policies and more tax cuts, arguing that Democrats would erase two years of progress. Republicans are concerned about maintaining their majority in Congress over the Democrats.

The evidence so far is mixed regarding how these voters will break. A solid lead was had and lost by the Democrats, which is obvious. That's nowhere near as well as they were doing in the GOP/Clinton seats, where Democrats led virtually all of the contests. But it's enough to push the potential Democratic House majority to a more comfortable 10 to 15 seats. The Senate is a different matter.

These figures may paint too rosy of a picture for the Democrats, however.

Polls show Democrats have a strong chance of retaking the House on Tuesday, but they shouldn't open the champagne yet-even if they do win, it could take weeks to be confirmed, according to a New York Times analysis. A federal court threw out this attempt in Georgia, allegedly a planned effort by Republican candidate for the post of governor, its current secretary of state Brian Kemp.

Democrats will do well on election day, largely thanks to the suburban swing that has received so much attention.

There are five critical toss-up House races in California, and as the election results map unfolds through the night, there is every chance that those races could be the ones that finally decide the balance of power in the House.
