Amazon will go bankrupt one day, CEO Jeff Bezos tells employees

Jeff Bezos on Amazon's future

"Amazon is not too big to fail.In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail".

As competitors crumble under the pressure to keep up in the age of online retail, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had a message for employees who think the fate of Sears or Toys "R" Us couldn't befall the tech giant: "Amazon is not too big to fail".

He continues by saying that the key to staving off that inevitability is to "obsess over customers". In March 2018, Bezos' responded to a question about the need to regulate a company with the market power and influence of Amazon.

Jeff Bezos may be the richest man in modern history and at the helm of the second company to join the $1 trillion club, but he has no illusions about Amazon's future.

He further said that one day Amazon will fail but their job is to delay it as long as possible. "If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not hundred-plus years", he said. Amazon will go bankrupt. It now has over 600,000 employees and a stock price that's quadrupled over the last five years.

He believes the day Amazon starts focusing on itself than its customers, it will start declining and eventually fall.

"It's a fact that we're a large company", Bezos said, according to a recording.

Amazon turned 24 in July of this year.

The goal of everyone at Amazon is to "prolong that demise" Bezos said. "It's reasonable for large institutions of any kind, whether it be companies or governments, to be scrutinised".

Several Amazon employees told CNBC on the condition of anonymity after the meeting that Bezos was particularly concerned with tightened government regulation and potential antitrust probes into the company. Meanwhile, regulators in Europe opened an antitrust probe questioning Amazon's use of merchant data, and Japanese officials are also reportedly investigating the company over antitrust allegations. "It's very interesting - I'm not sure what that says about society".
