Actor Idris Elba named People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

James Bond fans are campaigning Idris Elba to be the next person to play 007

The star was preceded by Blake Shelton who won last year's coveted title much to the surprise of many.

Elba, who found fame as drug kingpin Russell "Stringer" Bell in HBO's acclaimed crime drama "The Wire", told People his new status was "a nice surprise" and "an ego boost for sure".

The actor added: "My mum is going to be very, very proud".

He proposed to his model fiancé Sabrina Dhowre, 29, in February. Idris said on Instagram, seemingly oblivious to his own (very obvious) sexiness. I got picked on a little bit, ' he continued to the publication. But as soon as I could grow a mustache, I was the coolest kid on the block. "Grew a moustache, had some muscles, bonkers".

But if Idris lands the role, he won't be the first 007 actor to take People's accolade, with Pierce Brosnan being named Sexiest Man for 2001.

Elba appears on the cover of a special double issue of People that arrives on newsstands on Friday.

He is now filming "Hobbs and Shaw", the spinoff for "The Fate of the Furious" which focuses on Dwayne Johnson's character Luke Hobbs forming an unlikely alliance with Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham.

London-born Elba, 46, is People's 33rd sexiest man alive and joins previous winners including Mel Gibson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and David Beckham.

As for making a connection, Elba has learned the importance of "eye contact and empathy".

The Hollywood hunk is brimming with confidence but he also feels it is important to stay "humble and grounded". "You know, sort of reading someone's vibe", he says. The actor said he tries to live life without few regrets.

'Life isn't about thinking about what you should have done, ' explained Idris. "I think everyone should adopt the philosophy that tomorrow is not promised so just go for it today".
