WTA roundup: Ukrainian teen Yastremska wins Hong Kong

Wang Qiang Hong Kong 2018

Top-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina is close to bowing out of the Hong Kong Open but rain has disrupted her quarter-final match.

Wang, 26, is seeking her third title and has never faced the 18-year-old Yastremska.

Wang - who has been touted by some as a potential successor to Chinese tennis icon Li Na - was chasing her third title but was never in the match, which was over in little more than an hour.

First career victory at the WTA tournament brought Diane Yastremsky more than 160 thousand dollars in prize money and 280 points. She's yet to drop a set this week en route to the semifinals.

"But in the end (Wang) had the advantage, she had the confidence", Svitolina said.

The current world number 24 grabbed headlines at the French Open with her straight-sets demolition of Venus Williams, offering a hint of what was to come. She is battling four other players, including Pliskova, for the final three places at the WTA Finals in Singapore later this month.

Wang Qiang of China hits a return during her quarter-final women's singles match against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine at the Hong Kong Open tennis tournament on October 12, 2018. I was still up, I was 5-3 and my serve, and in the match, I did some great service games, so I was just trying to do the same and focus point by point.

Zhang will play the second semifinal of the season after she lost in Hiroshima to Amanda Anisimova and in Prague to Petra Kvitova, aiming to clinch the first WTA final since her title run at 2017 Guangzhou.

"Even though I was losing 4-0 I had a fighting spirit and I knew that I would find my game if I stayed patient", Yastremska said.

She said she may still play in Zhuhai and is now eyeing a top 20 ranking in the new year.

The 18-year-old quickly went down 4-0 to outsider Kristina Kucova - the world number 317 who knocked out Jelena Ostapenko in the first round - before recovering to win 7-6 (8/6), 6-2.

"I was nervous from the first ball", she said.
