Wimbledon to introduce 5th-set tiebreakers starting in 2019

Wimbledon Centre Court

The victor will be the first player or team to reach seven points with an advantage of two or more points. The All England Club said Friday Oct. 19, 2018, it will introduce fifth-set tiebreakers at Wimbledon next year when a match reaches 12-12.

The AELTC say the decision was taken following consultation with players and officials and following a thorough review of match data from the past 20 Championships.

It will apply to all Wimbledon events - qualifying, men's, women's, mixed and junior singles and doubles.

The move comes after this year's record-breaking semifinal between Kevin Anderson and John Isner required 6 hours, 35 minutes to complete, with the final set finishing 26-24.

The All England Club's decision leaves the Australian Open and Roland Garros as the only grand slams without final-set tiebreaks.

Wimbledon are bringing an end to freakishly long matches by introducing a tie-break at 12-12 in the deciding set across all events at next year's championships.

It comes after the final set of Kevin Anderson's semi-final with John Isner this year lasted nearly three hours. But the prospects of a repeat performance has disappeared for good after the All England Club announced the introduction of a tie-break in the deciding set.

Wimbledon is the second grand slam to introduce final-set tie-breaks, with singles matches at the US Open decided by a tie-break at 6-6.

Kevin Anderson was handicapped for the final after beating John Isner in a marathon semi-final.

"They recognise it affects the quality of matches in subsequent rounds".

"(Players) recognise that the quality of tennis goes down and players start playing not to lose in a long final set rather than the determination to win", he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I think players will play better because they know it will finish at 12-12 in a tie-break and they don't have to save energy".
