Vietnam exerts efforts to ease climate change impacts

'Heatwave to affect people in India, Pakistan'

The IPCC issued the report from Incheon, Republic of Korea, where for the past week, hundreds of scientists and government representatives have been poring over thousands of inputs to paint a picture of what could happen to the planet and its population with global warming of 1.5°C (or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said Australia should "absolutely" continue to use and exploit its coal reserves despite the IPCC's terrible warning the world only has until 2030 to avoid climate change catastrophe.

Addressing the dialogue, Deputy Minister of MONRE Le Cong Thanh said that as one of the countries heavily impacted by climate change, Vietnam has actively implemented worldwide commitments and made efforts to cope with climate change.

The landmark Paris Agreement adopted in December 2015 by 195 nations at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), included the aim of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change by "holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels".

Earth is rapidly headed for a place of no return, where climate change will leave the planet a more hostile place for people, plants and animals.

McCormack said the government won't change policy just because somebody might suggest that some sort of report is the way we need to follow and everything that we should do.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says there will be irreversible changes and the entire loss of some ecosystems if the world doesn't take immediate and intensive action to cut greenhouse gas emissions far more than is occurring now.

He reiterated his strong commitment to the ASEAN-UN Action Plan on Environment and Climate Change; a roadmap containing several measures to improve collaboration between the two organizations, and work towards implementing the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, described by the UN as a "blueprint to transform the world". He said he'll certainly consider what the IPCC report has to say.

By 2100, the likelihood of the Arctic Ocean being without sea ice in the summer would be once per century with global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared with at least once per decade with 2 degrees Celsius. Half a degree less of warming could even save some of the world's coral reefs. At high tide, the sea level rises above these gates, so the canals can only be drained at low-tide but this may be impacted by climate change.

Following the meeting in the RoK, Vietnam was chosen as the first country to be introduced to this special report.

Vietnam has great potential for renewable energy. He has also vowed to increase the burning of coal by the country.

For Canada, that means emissions would need to fall to a maximum of 385 million tonnes a year.
