Uganda says has no Ebola outbreak after tests turn negative

"In this DRC outbreak of Ebola, there are security risks to public health responders in the field that have not been present in past outbreaks", Tom Inglesby, MD, director of the Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said in an interview with Contagion®.

The outbreak was declared on August 1 and worsened in recent weeks, with risk of the virus spreading from northeastern Congo into Uganda and Rwanda.

The WHO's emergency committee will also decide what recommendations should be made to contain the virus' spread.

Kinshasa [D.R. Congo], Oct 16 (ANI): The World Health Organisation's (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom convened an Emergency Committee on Monday under the International Health Regulations following the recent outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo.

This was in the Beni and Mabalako health zones, the two epicentres of the Ebola outbreak.

In some instances health workers have been chased out by residents who reject the existence of the virus. In the words of Tom Frieden, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): "If Ebola had not been rapidly contained in Lagos, Nigeria, a densely populated city with many global airline connections, the disease most likely would have spread to other parts of Nigeria, elsewhere in Africa, and possibly to other continents".

The DRC Ministry of Health, WHO and other partners have been responding to the outbreak with teams on the ground, but WHO has warned that continuing insecurity severely affects both civilians and frontline workers, forcing the suspension of the response for several days in late September, and raising the risk that the virus will continue to spread. Twenty-one of these patients have died.

The Ebola virus which is transmitted by bats. It was first discovered in DRC in 1976 and named after the Ebola river. However, the article also highlighted that all EVD alerts from neighbouring nations have been ruled out, indicating that the outbreak is contained in Congo at the moment.
