Trump threatens to close Mexican border over caravan

Then-President Manuel Zelaya was turning the country in a leftist direction and eventually was accused of attempting to illegally prompt a rewriting of the constitution.

President Trump doubled-down on his demands that Central American nations block the growing "migrant caravan" before it reaches the United States' southern border Thursday; saying he may "call up the military" to stem the escalating crisis.

More than 2 million Guatemalans live in the United States, and locals here saw the Hondurans streaming in front of their homes and businesses with dreams of making it to the U.S.as their Central American brothers and sisters.

He also slammed the leaders of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala for failing to intervene.

Trump claimed that "Criminal elements and DRUGS [are] pouring in" and that it is "All Democrats [sic] fault for weak laws!" "Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border", Trump tweeted Thursday.

One participant, Dilmer Vigil, said earlier this week that he joined the caravan because he had been unemployed for six months.

It was unclear whether the immigrants would try to rush the border, as they did at the Honduras-Guatemala border several days ago, or whether they plan to turn themselves in to border authorities with the hope they will be granted entry.

The Associated Press reports that many migrants do not have passports and have been using national ID cards, which allow them to travel within Central America.

Officials in Mexico said anyone in the Honduran caravan who had proper documents could enter the country.

As a matter both USA and global law, asylum is only available to those fleeing persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to close the U.S. -Mexico border if Mexico does not stop the migrants. "We are certainly looking for concrete results and for solutions that work for both countries".

Mexico's foreign ministry didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

In morning tweets, Trump repeated vows to halt USA aid to Central American countries that do not disband the caravan and issued a fresh threat to the Mexican government, which said Wednesday that it would treat those in the caravan no differently than it does other migrants.

From about 160 people who departed last Friday from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, the migrants' ranks have ballooned as much as twentyfold, with estimates ranging as high as 3,000.

The previous day, the migrants advanced about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the Honduras-Guatemala border to arrive at the city of Chiquimula.

"But we have also made very clear that there's no legal ground on which Mexico can issue a permit by which people can just go through Mexico towards the United States", he concluded.
