Syrian army hoists national flag on Quneitra crossing

US Coalition Strikes Syrian Town Using Banned White Phosphorus - Reports

The border crossing between Jordan and Syria officially opened to civilians and trade on Monday after being closed for three years.

Israel on Monday reopened its Quneitra crossing in the Golan Heights to United Nations observers who had left the area in 2014 amid fierce fighting between Syrian regime forces and rebels.

On Sunday, Israel's military announced that the United Nations has chose to return its peacekeeping force, known as UNDOF, to the Quneitra crossing area.

The UN force returned to the area after Syrian government forces, backed by Russian Federation, succeeded in recapturing territory near the Golan Heights and driving out armed militant groups from a "de-escalation zone".

Technical teams from the two countries met on the Jordanian side on Sunday and agreed on the final arrangements to open the crossing from October 15, said Jordanian government spokeswoman Jumana Ghunaimat.

The closure of Nassib in 2015, when it was overrun by Syrian rebel factions, cut a crucial transit route for billions of dollars of goods and had serious economic repercussions across the region.

The reopening of the crossing is a major boost to Jordan's struggling economy amid price rises and austerity measures which have sparked the country's worst protests in decades.

A vital border crossing linking Syria and Jordan has reopened for the first time in three years, promising to restore commercial trade and travel between the two countries.

Iraq's foreign minister also praised the move, saying Syria should not be isolated from its Arab neighbours, and lauded Damascus for staying "strong" and united in the face of many adversities. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.

The first vehicle to cross from Jordan into Syria when the Nassib crossing reopened at 08:00 (05:00 GMT) on Monday was a black Mercedes Jeep.

Dozens of private cars lined up to cross from Jordan.

The crossing is also important to Syria's neighbor, Lebanon, which has used it for access to foreign markets for its agricultural exports.

The reported strikes are not the first time that the US-led coalition has been accused of using the banned munitions in recent weeks.

According to Elnashra, the Syrian source described the meetings with Lebanese officials as "always positive and fruitful, but also in need of greater and wider contact with the other officials". Both countries signed a disengagement agreement in 1974, which led to the establishment of Undof.

"The border between Israel and Syria was very calm before the start of the Syrian civil war and the return to normal is very convenient for Israel", he told AFP.
