Schumacher takes F3 title victory

Mick Schumacher has secured the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship title at Hockenheim

"I'm absolutely delighted", Schumacher said.

"The team gave me so much support all year long, even in the lowest moments".

Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff, who runs the F1 team that Schumacher drove for at the end of his career, said the teenager had great potential.

FIA boss Jean Todt - Michael's former boss at Ferrari where he won five of his championships - was one of the first to congratulate Mick.

Mick Schumacher, son of Formula One superstar Michael Schumacher, celebrates claiming the European Formula 3 Championship.

"He has shown that he has what it takes and that he can become one of the greats in our sport". I can hardly describe what a lovely feeling it is to be doing something that you love really well.

Formula 3 has always been used a proving ground for future Formula 1 drivers, with Michael Schumacher winning the now-defunct German Formula 3 title in 1990.

The crown also qualifies him to race in Formula 1 next season, although there are only a few open rides and the more obvious goal of conquering Formula 2.

In an interview with the BBC earlier this year Mick Schumacher had said his father was a huge influence on him.

In 2016, Schumacher junior finished second in both the German and Italian F4 championships and previous year when he stepped up to the F3 championships he was 12th with just one podium finish. "We are also obviously delighted that he registered a 500th race win for Mercedes in F3 and that he secured the title in a Mercedes-powered vehicle".

In 2014, he finished the season finishing second overall in the German, European and world championships.

Michael Schumacher, 49, has not been seen in public since suffering serious head injuries during a skiing accident in December 2013 while skiing with Mick and his condition is a secret closely guarded by his family.
