Saudi FM reaffirms commitment to full investigation into Khashoggi killing

Jamal Khashoggi

A major Saudi business conference opened in Riyadh on Tuesday morning, with the Future Investment Initiative (FII) overshadowed by the death of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi inside the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

It has said Mr Khashoggi died in a "fist fight" at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October. But some of his comments appeared to contradict previous statements from Riyadh, marking yet another shift in the official story.

Khashoggi made an initial visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on September 28, Erdogan said.

A family friend told the AP news agency Salah Khashoggi had been under a travel ban and barred from leaving the kingdom since previous year as a result of his father's criticism of the regime.

He also mentioned that the usage of the Vienna Convention, which offers diplomatic immunity, was "a matter of debate" in Khashoggi's case.

"The more one thinks about it, the more it feels like our intelligence is being mocked", he wrote.

In an interview with Russian news agency TASS published on Monday, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said "There is no intention" when asked if there would be a repetition of the 1973 oil embargo amid the global outcry over the killing of the Saudi journalist.

For Western allies of Saudi Arabia, a main question in the Khashoggi death is whether they believe that Prince Mohammed, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability.

Ahmed is the thirty-first son of the founding king of Saudi Arabia and until Salman decided to make his son MBS the crown prince Ahmed was next in line to succeed.

"This was an operation that was a rogue operation".

A Saudi human rights activist and close friend of the late Khashoggi, Yehia Assiri, dismissed the visit as "a serious assault on the family" of the murdered journalist, particularly as authorities continue to bar them from travelling.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman separately described as "deeply disturbing" reports that parts of Khashoggi's body have been found in Istanbul. The royal family said it didn't know what had happened for more than two weeks. We have people over in Saudi Arabia now.

In addition to the arrests, the Saudis say they have sacked two of the crown prince's aides and set up an organisation, under his leadership, to reform the intelligence agency over the killing. Others include U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who met with Prince Mohammed separately before the forum, according to Saudi state television. He has repeatedly highlighted the kingdom's importance as an ally.

In an interview with the Washington Post, he said "obviously there's been deception, and there's been lies".

Justin Trudeau said he's willing to freeze export permits with Saudi Arabia that allow armored auto sales in the kingdom, as opposition lawmakers raised questions about human rights abuses.

Erdoğan expressed confidence that Saudi King Salman is cooperating with the investigation, saying he does not doubt the king's sincerity.
