Salmonella outbreak linked to raw chicken in 29 states

CDC: Antibiotic-resistant salmonella outbreak includes Kentucky

The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention and public health and regulatory officials in several states are investigating a multi-state outbreak of salmonella linked to raw chicken products. Twenty-one people were sick enough that they had to be hospitalized.

The CDC says the outbreak started in January, and more people have tested positive for this strain through September.

No deaths have been reported. "CDC is not advising that consumers avoid eating properly cooked chicken products, or that retailers stop selling raw chicken products". No single common supplier has been identified. The strain has shown up in samples from a variety of raw chicken products including pet food, chicken pieces, ground pieces and whole chickens.

"Always handle raw chicken carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning", the CDC said. "General ways you can prevent Salmonella infection include good handwashing and cooking chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F".

Most people infected with salmonella get diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 3 days of exposure.

The CDC cautioned doctors that this strain resists the effects of common antibiotics, and said numerous patients also had urinary tract infections.

Most people infected with Salmonella recover without treatment, though in rare cases, antibiotics are needed for treatment.

Testing revealed that the salmonella strain involved in the outbreak is resistant to many types of antibiotics.

"Make sure you wash your hands after handling any raw poultry products".

CDC does not recommend feeding raw diets to pets.
