President Trump threatens closure of US-Mexico border to halt immigrants

Mexico sends federal forces to its southern border as migrant caravan heads north

Keilin Umana, a pregnant nurse who told the Associated Press that she had fled her home after receiving death threats from gang members, said: "We are not criminals, we are migrants".

While the exact role the United Nations would play would have to be worked out, it appears Mexico is seeking the global body's help in identifying which of the migrants in the caravan would qualify as refugees worthy of protection, and which are more properly viewed as traditional illegal immigrants.

Trump has made it clear to Mexico that he is monitoring its response.

By Thursday the convoy, which set out from the violent Honduras city of San Pedro Sula on Saturday and is now believed to be around 3,000 people strong, was moving up towards the Guatemala-Mexico border city of Tapachula.

The migrant caravan is now in Tapachula, Guatemala and is on its way to the Mexican-USA Border.

Two busloads of those police were visible on the Mexican side of the bridge from Tecun Uman Thursday. Metal barricades were stored to one side, but had not yet been deployed.

This prompted Mujica to travel to the march in Ciudad Hidalgo to express his support.

Mexico's southern border is notoriously porous and it was unclear how numerous migrants would attempt to cross legally at the bridge. Trump said in one tweet Thursday. Others could opt for the rafts that ferry people - and historically migrants - daily across the river.

"That's what it's going to be", he said.

Referring to a so-called caravan of several thousand Hondurans that has departed in hopes of reaching the United States, Trump claimed Democrats were to blame for an "assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador" with a caravan "INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS".

In a statement, the group said: 'Mujica has committed no crime'.

"Any person wishing to enter national territory must do so by complying with the requirements established in the Migration Law and at the authorized entry points, and may then move freely in Mexico until the expiration of the visa", the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. -Mexican citizenship, is accused of property damage.

Honduran migrants who are traveling to the U.S.as a group get a free ride in the back of a truck as they make their way through Zacapa, Guatemala, Oct. 17, 2018.

Three weeks before the USA elections, the caravan was bound to draw Trump's ire.

Trump also suggested that the migrants hoping to enter the US are linked to crime and drugs that he said are "pouring in", and he called on Mexico to stop the "onslaught".

It has also prompted a slew of new rulings about asylum law from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and the introduction of a "zero tolerance" policy for border crossers that led to family separations.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be in Mexico this Friday, and US media report that he will discuss plans to stop the caravan.

Trump's stance, he said, was "what he has always presented", adding he saw "nothing surprising in it".

"Nobody likes them (Trump's comments)".

Pueblo Sin Fronteras has said it has no organizational role in the current caravan, although Mujica has been quoted as saying they would "help".
