MJ Akbar's resignation accepted by PM Narendra Modi

Indian minister in #MeToo storm announces resignation

While many of these organisations have initiated action to enquire into the allegations by the affected women and have either removed the persons involved from their employment or distanced those under investigation from participation in the day to day affairs of their organisations, it comes as a rude shock to us that no action whatsoever has been forthcoming from the institution primarily charged with upholding the rule of law, namely, the Government of India, against one of its senior members. They also have often cited their failed efforts to get justice through regular channels.

Akbar was on an official trip to Africa when these allegations emerged.

"It is created to push women back into silent compliance and will silence the voices of the many who have not yet spoken up", it said. In a sense I feel vindicated.

In her account, Patel recounted Akbar's persistent advances. You sexually harassed me too.

Akbar's female colleagues in the cabinet have faced repeated questions about their views of his conduct.

"I have, therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of Minister of State for External Affairs", he said, adding that he is "deeply grateful" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for the "opportunity they gave me to serve my country".

The controversy was also becoming a ripe target for Modi's critics.

Responding to the allegations after returning to India from an official visit overseas, Akbar called the allegations "false and fabricated" and questioned their timing, hinting at a political campaign against him.

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress Party president, alluded to the affair at a public event.

The movement, that began in the United States just over a year ago in response to accusations of sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry, gained traction in India in the past two weeks after a Bollywood actress complained about inappropriate behavior on film sets and complaints of improper conduct roiled India's biggest comedy group.

Modi is yet to publicly speak on the matter and calls to three spokespersons of his Bharatiya Janata Party were unanswered on Wednesday.

A BJP spokesman, Sambit Patra, did not respond to requests for comment.

Nearly a fortnight after the allegations first emerged, minister of state for external affairs, MJ Akbar, has stepped down.

Akbar's current complaint names only Ramani, although in a statement on Sunday, the minister also lashed out at others who accused him.

"Eventually the truth prevails", Ghazala Wahab, another journalist who accused Akbar of making physical advances, told CNN NEWS 18.

"The only office where I worked with her was that of The Asian Age". Khan has denied the accusations.

"In attempting to refute my story of molestation and harassment, Akbar has tried to hide inside his supposedly "very tiny cubicle, patched together by plywood and glass". These false, baseless and wild allegations have caused irreparable damage to my reputation and goodwill". "I am happy right now".

The article included a brief email exchange between Kamp's father and Akbar. "The #MeToo movement needs support across party lines".

One of India's most influential editors, he has edited leading English-language newspapers in India, such as The Telegraph and The Asian Age.
