Mick Schumacher '100 per cent' will be in F1, says Hamilton

2018 Japanese GP

Lewis Hamilton described Juan Manuel Fangio as the "godfather" of Formula One on Thursday and said it was insane to think he could soon join the late Argentine as a five times world champion.

Ahead of a weekend which could well see him secure his fifth title, the Briton was asked what the name Fangio means to him, and whether he can envisage himself muscling cars like the Mercedes-Benz W196, Alfa-Romeo 159 or Lancia-Ferrari D50.

"I don't know if the 50s was a particularly good time, it wasn't a great time for black people either, so I probably wouldn't have been racing back then", said Hamilton.

The Brit is closing in on a fifth World title and could clinch it at the upcoming United States Grand Prix if he is able to outscore Sebastian Vettel by eight points at his beloved Circuit of The Americas - a track where he has won five times in six races.

"We naturally want to win this weekend".

Hamilton said the achievements of the 19-year-old's famous father, the most successful driver in F1 history, would not pile too much pressure on.

"I don't really have a massive explanation for it", said Hamilton.

Every single year since he started winning titles with Mercedes in 2014, Hamilton has won at least three races on the bounce after the summer break to give himself a big chance going into the season end. "So collectively as a team we've had to go above and beyond to deliver more than them".

Hamilton said: "He obviously has a lot of talent like his dad had, just like Keke and Nico [Rosberg], just like when Fernando has kids, I am sure Alonso will be here again!"

"I'm grateful to be in this era and with the technology that we have and seeing the cars advance". "It's going to be wet tomorrow I think and potentially on Saturday, so it's going to be a tricky weekend and nothing is given".

"We are improving the auto the whole year long, improving our knowledge of the vehicle and how to get the most out of it".
