Man Booker Prize judges tell authors: stop being so long-winded

The judging panel of the Man Booker Prize Val McDermid Leanne Shapton Kwame Anthony Appiah Jacqueline Rose and Leo Robson with the shortlisted books

Kwame Anthony Appiah, chair of judges, said, "All of our six finalists are miracles of stylistic invention".

Daisy Johnson, an Oxford graduate, was today announced as the youngest author to be shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

"The Long Take" is one of two debut novels on the list, alongside "Everything Under", a story of words and memory by British writer Daisy Johnson.

With a genre-defying entry, Robertson's verse novel The Long Take - which also includes photographs - follows the psychological trials of a D-Day veteran.

"And we look forward to re-reading all of them as we make our way towards what will inevitably be the very hard choice of only one of these brilliantly imaginative works as this year's victor of the Man Booker Prize", he added. The two surprise contenders on this year's longlist - Belinda Bauer's thriller Snap and Nick Drnaso's graphic novel Sabrina, the first ever to be nominated for the literary prize - both failed to make the final cut.

For more, including the complete shortlist, see the Man Booker Prize website. Praised as the best chronicler of the millennial generation in English, Rooney is making waves with her second novel, Normal People, though the jury didn't deem her fit to graduate to the shortlist. The Overstory is "the eco-epic of the year and perhaps the decade", said one of the panel's judges, Leanne Shapton.

"Swinging effortlessly between combat with its traumatic aftermath, and the brute redevelopment of American cities, The Long Take shows us the ravages of capitalism as a continuation of war-time violence by other means". Earlier this year, Ondaatje again won the Golden Man Booker, commemorating the Prize's 50th anniversary, for the same book. "And we look forward to re-reading all of them as we make our way towards what will inevitably be the very hard choice of only one of these brilliantly imaginative works as this year's victor of the Man Booker Prize".

In 2013, aged 28, New Zealander Eleanor Catton was previously the youngest victor of the £50,000 prize for her novel The Luminaries.
