Lifespan 2040 ranking puts Spain on top, Japan 2nd

Lifespan 2040 US down China up Spain on top

The increase in Singaporeans' life expectancy can be attributed to its health system and how key health issues are addressed, says the study on health and life expectancy.

The report found that the average life expectancy in the USA would only increase from 78.7 years to 79.8 years between 2016 to 2040, which would actually lower the ranking-from 43rd to 64th-on the report's list of 195 countries.

Spain just edged out the sushi-loving nation, with people expected to live for an average of 85.8 years by 2040, just ahead of Japan's 85.7 years. Meanwhile, people growing up in countries such as Japan, China, and Spain will both see greater gains in life expectancy and live longer than their American counterparts.

In contrast, the United States in 2016 ranked 43rd with an average lifespan of 78.7 years.

Hong Kong, which has the world's highest average life expectancy, according to Japan's welfare ministry, was not ranked in the study.

If recent health trends continue, China could see its average lifespan jump from 76.3 years in 2016 to 81.9 years in 2040, thus climbing 29 spots to rank 39th among 195 nations.

But in 2040, however, the leading causes are expected to be malaria, lower respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, diarrheal diseases, neonatal encephalopathy due to birth asphyxia and trauma, neonatal preterm birth complications, neonatal sepsis, congenital birth defects, meningitis, and ischemic heart disease.

In 2016, four of the top-ten causes of premature mortality were non-communicable diseases or injuries.

These diseases include diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, and lung cancer as well obesity.

In the study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, Singapore will take third place in 2040 with a life span of 85.4 years (from 83.3 years as at 2016). Air pollution ranked sixth. In a substantial number of countries, too many people will continue earning relatively low incomes, remain poorly educated, and die prematurely.

Lesotho, the Central African Republic, Zimbabwe, Somalia and Swaziland are in the rankings basement.

"Inequalities will continue to be large", said researcher Dr Christopher Murray. In 2040, that figure is expected to rise to eight out of 10. Specifically, 87 countries will experience a decline, and 57 will see an increase of one year or more.

The report also predicted that the life-expectancy differences between high- and low-income countries would decrease by 2040, under the most-likely scenario.

The scientists also included in their model 79 factors that affect the health, such as sanitation conditions, access to clean water, smoking and body mass index.

"These scenarios offer new insights and help to frame health planning, especially regarding long lag periods between initial investments and their impacts, such as in the research and development of drugs". Overall increase mortality from non-communicable diseases.

More generally, the world will see an acceleration of the shift already under way from communicable to non-communicable diseases, along with injuries, as the top cause of premature death.
